Our Story

Company

New Mexico Tea Company has stood on the corner of Mountain Road and Twelfth Street, between Old Town and Downtown, since November of 2006. David and his mother Dianne opened NM Tea CO with nothing behind them but credit cards, and a dream to bring tea, as they knew it at the time, to the south west. One couple came in on the first day (The Landlords) and no customers came the second day! But in the days, weeks, and years to come, you did come to buy tea, and support a small business that has been through it all.

Today we have more than three hundred loose teas, ranging from white, green, oolong, black, pu-erh and yellow, along with close to a hundred single herbs and spices and the blends we make from them.

Founders

David Edwards

David ran the shop for most of its twenty-year history, but currently lives in Nagaland, along the Assam border, with his wife and their child, where they are trying to start a small tea farm. He still runs the digital side of NM Tea Co from there, working to make it the best place to buy tea online in the same way he made the shop the best place to buy tea in Albuquerque.

Dianne Edwards

Dianne is now retired from NM Tea Co, but her contribution in starting the store cannot be overstated. Her aesthetic and judgment helped set the tone for NM Tea Co in the early years. One of her blends is still available to buy today; Chamomile Compassion. And our Masala Chai is based off of a recipe she brewed while raising David.

Manager

Shawn has worked here since 2011 and runs the shop now. Name a tea you have liked and she will put three others in front of you and explain how each one differs or is similar.

Staff

We are lucky to have the team we have. The people working at NM Tea Co, whether behind the counter, shipping orders, or keeping the website running, are genuinely knowledgeable about tea and genuinely happy to share that knowledge with you. They are the reason customers come back.

Our floor staff will help you find something you love, whether you walk in knowing exactly what you want or have no idea where to start. They ask good questions and give honest answers, and they have introduced a lot of people to teas they now consider staples.

The shipping team keeps everything running behind the scenes, blending our house teas, packing orders, and making sure what arrives at your door is exactly what it should be.

We are proud of the people who work here. They make this place what it is.
