Whole milk thistle seed, grown in Croatia. Crack or grind the seed before brewing; whole, it gives up very little to hot water.
The plant, Silybum marianum, is a tall purple-flowered thistle native to the Mediterranean and now naturalised across most of the world.
The name comes from the white veining on the plant's leaves, which legend explained as drops of the Virgin Mary's milk; the same story gives it Mary thistle and holy thistle. Early colonists brought it to North America.
Bring filtered or spring water to 212°F. Add 1 tsp of tea leaves to an 8oz cup. Pour boiling water over the tea leaves and let steep 5 minutes.
