Hawthorn appears in the folklore of many different cultures, including that of the Greeks and Celtic peoples. Legend has it that Hawthorn was the tree that crown of thorns Jesus wore was fashioned from, as well as the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Serbian and Croatian folklore states that Hawthorn is particularly deadly to vampires, and advises that one must use the wood of the Hawthorn to make the stake necessary to slay them. And in keeping with the cardiovascular benefits of the plant, Celtic lore states that Hawthorn has the ability to heal a broken heart.
