Gyokuro (meaning "precious dew") is a shaded green tea and considered one of the finest green teas in Japan. Infusion produces a light green color and a deep, complex flavor. Gyokuro has a unique sweetness since shade allows the tea to retain a high Theanine and chlorophyll content.

Extra Info:

Gyokuro is made from single buds that are picked only in April/May. The leaves are small - about 3/4ths an inch long and extremely fragrant and tender. Immediately after plucking the leaves are taken to the factory and steamed for about 30 minutes to seal in the flavor and arrest oxidation. Next they are fluffed with hot air and pressed and dried to 30% moisture content. Repeated rolling takes place until the tea develops long thin dark green needles at which time it is finally dried to a 4-6% moisture content.

Brewing Instructions:

Bring filtered or spring water to 160°F. Add 1 tsp of tea leaves to an 8oz cup. Pour boiling water over the tea leaves and let steep 3 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • Green tea leaves (shade grown for 4 weeks)

Origin:

Fukuoka, Japan

Reviews:

I am new to non-grocery store green teas and got a sample of this Gyokuro along with some other 1 oz bags of Sencha and Bancha to try as well. I really liked the Sencha and Bancha, but the Gyokuro has been my absolute favorite and has blown my expectations out of the water. It was so smooth, I got a nice seaweed (I guess umami) flavor and scent. I was able to brew 4 cups from one tsp and still enjoy each cup. I also did not notice as much of the dry mouth that I get with other green teas. I think that dryness is the tannins (according to Reddit hehe). I tried this both warm and chilled, and both were extremely pleasant. The attached image is the 3rd brew.

Im pretty new to green tea, and surely not a tea snob. I received a sample of gyokuro and I barely finished the first cup...umami was a new weird thing to me! However, by the end of my sample packet I was hooked. I love the stuff now. It reminds me of a soup broth in a way. I really wish an organic option was available. Thanks for the sample packs over the years nmteaco!

I've been buying this Gyokuro for over four years now. It's one of the finest green teas you'll find anywhere. It's never bitter or oxidized (brown). I've tried ordering Gyokuro straight from Japan, but it's never been as good as this one. Dave Edwards has really done his homework. I usually steep a level teaspoon in 10 oz of water at 150F, but it's really hard to produce a bitter cup with this one.

As I sit here and sharpen my knife which was hand forged for me by Mr. Takeda just a few towns away from where Gyokuro is grown, I see a subtle image of the blacksmith enjoying his own cup of Gyokuro and smiling as he carefully perfects the beauty of his carbon steel creations. Perfection always leaves you wanting more. A top notch green tea from a top notch distributor. Thank you.

Gyokuro is by far - my favorite green tea. This was my first purchase from NMTC and I have been very satisfied with my purchase. The customer service I received was excellent and the tea arrived within a few days of placing my order. I have enjoyed a number of cups of tea already from this order. I highly recommend both NMTC & Gyokuro.
