The tombo (Japanese for dragonfly) skip merrily along the deep blue surface, mimicking their real movement along the water, on this hand-painted ceramic incense burner. Dragonflies are associated with swift and courageous behavior as well as a folk belief that they represent the soul of a deceased ancestor returned to visit living relatives. There's even a festival to commemorate their return held in Japan called Obon.
