The dried berries are peppery enough that parts of Europe sold them as a pepper substitute, which is where the older name, monk's pepper, comes from. They are small, hard and dark, so crack or grind them before brewing.
The tree is Vitex agnus-castus, a Mediterranean shrub with palmate leaves and spikes of small violet flowers. Ours is from Morocco.
Bring filtered or spring water to 212°F. Add 1 tsp of tea leaves to an 8oz cup. Pour boiling water over the tea leaves and let steep 4 minutes.
